Amazing Pictures from the USGS Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab

Some of these pictures were recently circulating on various sites and so I decided to take a closer look:

The photographs are breathtakingly beautiful and artistic by virtue of their nature and are mainly detailed macrophotography of insect specimens

These pictures are by the USGS Native Bee Inventory and Monitoring Program which designs and develops large and small scale surveys for native bees. As part of this program they also develop identification tools and keys for native bee species and as such one aspect of creating these tools is creating accurate and detailed pictures of native bees and the plants and insects they interact with.

Please take a look at their photos here

Sam Droege whose primary responsibilities are the exploration and development of monitoring techniques and programs for plants and animals is the brains behind this operation.
